SHOULD WE USE AUTHENTIC MATERIALS IN THE CLASSROOM? IGOR GAVILAN

In this workshop we will see that genuine English materials can encompass a wide range of working possibilities such as websites, ads, magazine articles, songs, podcasts, cartoons, posters, labels on a bottle, messages on a window, poems, graffitti, among others. We will dispel the myth that a student cannot cope with real English. Authentic materials will certainly help language learners be confident in a real situation.

It should be a motivating experience, a prize or an end of term treat, but all too often the use of video in the classroom has the opposite effect. In this workshop we look at some different ways to incorporate video in the classroom, in a fun and motivating way.

The key to successful distance learning is in building an online community. Consciously designing a structure which will support and create a feeling of community and integration for the all participants is the core to creating a safe and successful learning environment for students. This talk will present ways in which we can manipulate technological tools in order to infuse online classes with humanity.

Teaching the history and culture of English-speaking countries is an essential component of the ESL classroom. This can be done more meaningfully and more interactively using songs and other cultural identifiers as jumping off points for the lessons - presented through Digital Storytelling techniques -. This talk will offer examples and the applications to create such projects.

They are fun and a positive way of introducing exams to young children.This workshop demonstrates activities to prepare for each part of the reading/writing examsthrough games. They can also be applied to general classroom use.

REINVENTING THE WHEEL COURSEBOOK MAKEOVER AND EFFECTIVE USE OF WALL DISPLAYS. PATRICIA BERGSTRÖM  

 

Motivation is paramount to effective learning. However, quite often teachers find creativity and doing things in a more motivating manner, time-consuming. This workshop aims to provide practical ideas on how coursebook activities can come alive and how we can make better use of wall displays to further enhance learning, while still keeping to our yearly planning.

Today’s students have unlimited information available via technology tools. Also without technology, we run the risk of our lessons seeming out of touch and irrelevant. The speaker will look at the reasons why we should embrace technology and its tools. Thus, we may realize that at the heart of high-tech teaching, there are also some surprisingly ‘old-fashioned’ educational values.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE COURSEBOOK BOX. SAMANTHA LEWIS  

 

A coursebook offers a wealth of material geared towards the interests of our teenage learners, but by thinking beyond the given exercises and lifting the material off the page we can motivate, engage and maximise learning potential. In this workshop we will try out fun, creative ways of using coursebook material and incorporate digital tools to develop the skills learners need today such as critical thinking, problem solving and communication.
